Dear Sailors, dear Parents, dear Optimist Friends,

Please find below our second Newsletter of the year.

Swiss Championship by Points (PM/CSP)

The 14th and 15th May was held in Thun the last PM of the 2021-22 regatta-season. This sets the final results of the Swiss Championship by Points (PM/CSP), which is at this point of the year the same as the “Bestenliste” (last 6 national regattas):

PM Liste. Congratulations to the top 3 Swiss sailors and top 3 Benjamins this season:

  • Damian Berther, DRCS
  • Edward Hirsch, SNG
  • Eivinn Lofterød, DRCS
  • Lena Müller, DRCS
  • Jesse Züger, DRCS
  • Mey Adakan, ZYC

Summer 2022

The next national event will be the Team-race and fleet-race Swiss Championships end of August, but sailing will not stop until then. Traditionally in June there are several interesting regattas at regional levels, all of them are open to any participant. They can be found in the Swiss Optimist program, on the website: https://optimist.ch/htm/Schedule.htm

In summer there are also interesting camps. The most famous is the traditional Davos camp (17-23 July), but most clubs hold beginner’s camps in this period. Remember, did you also start there? So will certainly several of the future champions.

There will be also many interesting international regattas, where Swiss Opti sailors will go again, like the Ora Cup and then the Simone Lombardi Trophy on Lake Garda, just to name two.

Selection 2022

It also in this summer period that the very best will face special challenges: the World and European Championships. End of May the Swiss Optimist Class had its second selection regatta in Workum (after Portoroz in April). Our national team for 2022 is now official (link to calculation):

The top 5 sailors are selected for the World Championship, 27th June to 7th July, 2022, Bodrum, Turkey:

  • Lars Keller, YCA
  • Romain Surdez, BT
  • Mark Benczur, BT

The next 4 boys and 3 girls are selected for the European Championship, 30th July to 6th August, Sonderborg, Denmark:

  • Jacob Bründler, SCE
  • Eivinn Lofterød, DRCS
  • Lars Dittel, BT
  • Tino Durrer, DRCS

Thereof best 2 girls and 2 boys (Morgane, Luna, Jacob and Eivinn) are also automatically selected to represent Switzerland at the Team-Race European Championship from 23rd to 28th August, Lake Ledro, Italy.

The National Coach is Sebastian Peri Brusa this year, the Teamleader will be Frédérique. We wish them all good winds!

For the moment, we have no confirmation if Switzerland is granted slots for the North American Championship (NAM – 13th to 20th November 2022, Nassau, Bahamas). The class applied again for 4 places.

Selection 2023

For next year the Swiss Optimist Committee decided to select earlier. The reasons are to give more time to the national team to prepare and train together with the national coach, and also to propose to the regions a common training/regatta event, bringing the youngest and champions together.

Therefore in 2023 the first selection regatta will be Palamos in February, the second is yet to be decided but it will be around Easter time. The DYR in Workum will be the preparation regatta for the national team and a common training for all the regional teams. The PM counting for the Top30 calculation will not change. (Please be aware that this criteria will have to be fulfilled after the 2nd selection regatta). The early selection method is introduced on an experimental basis for 2023, we will discuss in summer 2023 if we maintain it for the future.

Again feel free to contact us for any question, proposal, wish or remark! We are also looking forwards meeting you in person at the Lake Silvaplana during the Swiss Championship for our Annual General Meeting (scheduled 18h00 on Friday 2nd September). The Agenda will be communicated in July and posted on the Swiss Optimist Website: http://www.optimist.ch.

Your Swiss Optimist Committee:
Julie, Tanja, Carmen, Chantal, Frédérique, Damir, David, Hene, Marecelo, Riccardo, Tirone, William
